SPORTS INJURIES

Sports injuries can result from various factors such as overuse, direct impact, or exerting excessive force beyond the body's structural limits.

These injuries are typically categorized as acute or chronic. Acute injuries, like a sudden sprained ankle from an awkward landing, occur suddenly, while chronic injuries develop over time due to repeated overuse of muscles or joints, often aggravated by poor technique or structural issues.

It's essential to seek prompt medical evaluation following any sports injury, as the severity may be underestimated. For example, what may initially seem like a simple ankle sprain could potentially be a more serious bone fracture.

Common types of sports injuries include:
  • Ankle sprain
  • Bruises
  • Groin strain
  • Hamstring strain
  • Knee joint injuries
  • Stress fractures

Immediate treatment for sprains, strains, and joint injuries should involve:
  • Resting the injured area for 48-72 hours
  • Applying ice
  • Compression with a firm elastic bandage
  • Elevating the injured area above heart level
  • Seeking medical attention promptly

Emergency situations requiring ambulance assistance may include prolonged loss of consciousness, neck or spine injuries, broken bones, head or facial injuries, eye injuries, and abdominal trauma.

Treatment for sports injuries varies depending on the type and severity. Physiotherapy can assist in rehabilitation, focusing on exercises to improve strength and flexibility. Returning to sports activities should be guided by medical professionals to prevent further harm.
Preventive measures are crucial and include thorough warm-ups, wearing appropriate footwear and safety gear, staying hydrated, scheduling exercise sessions wisely, cross-training for overall fitness, maintaining proper technique, and ensuring adequate rest.
